Genomic comparison of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae from humans and gulls in Alaska

چکیده

Wildlife may harbour clinically important antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, but the role of wildlife in epidemiology bacterial infections humans is largely unknown. In this study, we aimed to assess dissemination blaKPC carbapenemase gene among and gulls Alaska. We performed whole-genome sequencing determine genetic context isolates from all four human carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) reported Alaska between 2013–2018 compare sequences with seven previously CPE gull faeces within same region time period. Genomic analysis suggested independent acquisition events no evidence for direct transmission people gulls. However, some shared conserved elements surrounding blaKPC, suggesting possible exchange species. Our results highlight genomic plasticity associated demonstrate that sampling be useful identifying relevant antimicrobial resistance not observed through local passive surveillance humans.

Comparison of clinical methods for detecting carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae

We evaluated detection of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) by routine minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) testing, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using Xpert® Carba-R assay, hydrolysis of ertapenem and imipenem detected by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), and hydrolysis by colorimetry using the EPI-CRE assay. Ninety-si...

Vital Signs: Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae

BACKGROUND Enterobacteriaceae are a family of bacteria that commonly cause infections in health-care settings as well as in the community. Among Enterobacteriaceae, resistance to broad-spectrum carbapenem antimicrobials has been uncommon. Over the past decade, however, carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) have been recognized in health-care settings as a cause of difficult-to-treat inf...

Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae: epidemiology and prevention.

Over the past 10 years, dissemination of Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC) has led to an increase in the prevalence of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) in the United States. Infections caused by CRE have limited treatment options and have been associated with high mortality rates. In the previous year, other carbapenemase subtypes, including New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase, h...

Fosfomycin susceptibility in carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae from Germany.

Due to the increase in multidrug-resistant Enterobacteriaceae, the interest in older antimicrobial agents, like fosfomycin, has increased. In this study, we used agar dilution for testing susceptibilities to fosfomycin in a collection of 107 carbapenem-nonsusceptible Enterobacteriaceae isolates, of which 80 produced various types of carbapenemases, including KPC, VIM, NDM, and OXA-48. Overall, ...
